Synopsis
In feudal Japan the harbor city of Sakai is a haven for farmers left homeless by pillaging warlords. Kanzaburo, a sturdy young farmer's son newly arrived in the city, sells himself to a wealthy merchant and is assigned to guard a parrot belonging to Midori, one of the merchant's two granddaughters. The second granddaughter, Makie, is being wooed both by a samurai and a nobleman of high rank, the ambitious merchant's choice. A cruise on his new ship is arranged for the rival suitors, with Makie and Midori also on board as well as Kanzaburo and many other attendants. Fulfilling the captain's premonitions, a violent storm suddenly comes up and all aboard are stranded on a deserted island when the ship sinks. Under the primitive conditions of this new environment, the nobleman and the samurai become cringing cowards while Kanzaburo emerges as a calm, effective leader. Makie, who has heretofore treated Kanzaburo haughtily, now clamors for his attentions, but he realizes that the change is temporary; besides, his romantic hopes lie with Midori. Finally, rescue arrives, but Kanzaburo is left behind as a result of the samurai's treachery and must find his way back to Sakai alone against tremendous odds. But the love of Midori and a future full of hope are his ultimate rewards. [A Japanese source suggests that Midori joins Kanzaburo as he sets out on his own.]
