Synopsis
Following the break-up of her marriage, Jane, an Englishwoman in her mid-30's, is on the brink of a nervous breakdown. Unable to distinguish between reality and fantasy, she experiences a series of real and imaginary confrontations with her husband, her lover, and her analyst. The meetings reveal different aspects of the woman's complex personality as she futilely attempts to adjust to the demands of each man. Her husband appears as self-contained and detached, her younger lover as a man who will soon tire of her devotion, and her analyst as a relentless inquisitor. During the course of her mental wanderings, Jane sees herself as an old woman shoplifting in a department store, as a middle-aged wife lunching with her husband in a fashionable restaurant, and as a young married woman on the verge of her first illicit love affair. Ultimately, she and her lover appear in a park where they draw revolvers and shoot each other--but the incident may have occurred only in her mind.
