Synopsis

In 1945 Sergeant Kosugi, who has been decorated for valor, is sent to the Chinese front as punishment for insubordination. He falls in with a military band headed his way, to a fort where his brother is stationed. Kosugi arrives at the fort just as his brother is being executed by a firing squad for desertion. In a rage, Kosugi attacks the commanding officer and escapes a court-martial only by agreeing to attempt capture of the strategic Fort Graveyard. Kosugi, three privates released from the stockade, and the inexperienced military band manage to surprise the enemy and drive them from the fort. The Chinese, however, surround the fort, and, without food or ammunition, even Kosugi cannot hold them off.
