Synopsis

During the China Incident, two Japanese army lieutenants, Wakana and Taira, are assigned to Major Otawara's battalion in the northern China mountains. Although the Chinese army is 70 miles away, the battalion has been plagued by General Lung's guerrillas, who have just blown up a bean warehouse owned by Lee, a Japanese sympathizer. Fearing a second explosion, Lee decides to move his stock, and as Wakana escorts the convoy, it is attacked by the guerrillas. Wakana unsuccessfully pursues them, only to find on his return that the entire shipment is missing. After Taira is ordered to an observation post, he is taken prisoner and Otawara, suspecting he has deserted, assigns Lieutenant Isshiki, Otawara's rival, and Wakana to locate Taira. In disguise, the two lieutenants penetrate the enemy fort and discover that Lee is actually General Lung and the shipment of beans was a cache of arms for the guerrillas. Thrown into the same cell as Taira, the men watch in horror as Somemaru, a geisha Taira loves, is tortured. Taira then agrees to write a letter to the battalion which will lead them into a trap. However, Isshiki breaks out of the cell and blows up a powder magazine. The soldiers secure a machine gun and a fight ensues.
