Synopsis

A group of temporary laborers hired for a construction job in a remote forest are paid in advance, but armed guards surround the construction site to prevent anyone from escaping the backbreaking work. Among the workers is Tatsu, a brutal, powerful illiterate whose gentle qualities are unknown to his fellow workers. He becomes infatuated with a woman who works in the camp mess hall, but she rejects his clumsy advances. The foreman then forces his attentions on the woman, Tatsu intervenes, and a duel with axes ensues. The woman, who now respects Tatsu, is actually married to an ex-convict who soon arrives at the camp. The jealous foreman assigns the husband difficult work, and Tatsu postpones his own escape plans to help the couple get away. Later, having made good his escape, Tatsu learns that a rival band of workers, angered over a swindle involving the foreman and their wages, are on their way to the camp. Tatsu returns ahead of them and succeeds in saving the day.
