Synopsis

Michi, a high school student, is in love with Ishiyama, a college student boarding with her and her mother. Her romance is shattered by one of her teachers, who informs Ishiyama that Michi's father is in prison. Michi marries the teacher, who so abuses her by his cruelty that she runs away to Tokyo. There she is befriended by a Korean who gives her a job in his printing firm. Michi's husband tracks her down and abruptly destroys the peace she had achieved under the Korean's generous treatment; and her employer is forced to fire her when their friendship is misinterpreted by the other workers. Michi meets Inami, a student of progressive socialism whom the police are investigating as a possible subversive. The couple marry and live happily with a daughter born to them until Inami is arrested and drafted to serve in the waning days of World War II. He drowns when his transport is sunk, but Michi survives the bombing of Tokyo by living off the black market. One day she meets Ishiyama, the former college student and now a black marketeer, who asks her about her husband. She answers that she is waiting for him, knowing that all she has to live for now is her daughter.
