Synopsis
On emergency leave from Vietnam to attend the funeral of his stepfather, U. S. Marine Paul Fredericks arrives in San Diego and is given a lift by college student Melissa Hamilton, who is meeting Thesp, the leader of the hippie commune to which she belongs. Paul, attracted to Melissa, joins her and her friends, who introduce him to marijuana. Paul accompanies Melissa, Anchovy, another commune member, and Thesp, who is also a drug dealer, on a smuggling run (ostensibly a holiday) across the Mexican border. They are searched on their return, but border guards do not find the hidden marijuana; and Paul accuses Melissa of having known they were carrying contraband. On his last day of leave, Paul seeks out Melissa at an antiwar demonstration in Berkeley, but she breaks off with him. Returning to Vietnam, Paul is killed in action.
