Synopsis

Emperor Ling, ruler of the State of Chin, entrusts all affairs of state to Tu An-chia, a ruthless and unscrupulous minister. During a minor disturbance, Prime Minister Chao Tun and other loyal government officials insist that the emperor dispatch the able Gen. Wei Chiang to quiet the uprising that Tu would have preferred to leave alone. Intimidated by the patriotism of the prime minister, Tu persuades the emperor to purge Chao and 300 members of Chao's clan; Chuang Chi, the emperor's sister and Chao's daughter-in-law, is the only member spared. After the massacre, Chuang gives birth to a son whose life immediately becomes endangered. To save the Chao heir, Cheng Ying, the Chaos' loyal doctor friend, substitutes his newly born son for the infant, and when Tu orders the infant brought to him, Cheng reveals the whereabouts of his own son, who is immediately killed. As a reward, Cheng asks only for the protection of the infant in his home. Tu, unaware of the deception, takes the infant and names him Cheng Wu. Fifteen years later, Cheng Ying invites Tu to his home where he is confronted by Gen. Wei Chiang, Chuang Chi, and his adopted son, who has become a fine soldier. The young man informs Tu of his origin, calls himself by his real name, Chao Wu, and avenges his family by killing Tu. Cheng Ying receives the praise of the people for his sacrifice.
