Synopsis

Billy Bonney kills the man who assaulted his mother and is shielded by prospector Pat Garrett, an old friend of the family. In spite of Garrett's protection, however, Billy shoots those pursuing him and flees to Mexico, where he becomes widely known as "Billy the Kid." He attempts to reform when Englishman Henry Tunstill and his daughter Helen befriend him and ask him to work on their ranch; but when Tunstill is murdered, Billy turns killer again. Governor Lew Wallace of the New Mexico Territory offers amnesty to criminals on the run, and Billy returns home to visit his dying mother. Garrett, now sheriff, tries to convince the youth to mend his ways, but Billy guns down a townsman who blames Billy for his mother's death. Once again, Billy becomes a fugitive and flees to Helen's home, where the two plan to begin a new life together in another territory. Billy manages to convince the pursuing Garrett of his sincerity, but he is ambushed by one of his old enemies. Helen accuses Garrett of the killing, which he denies, but the blame nevertheless follows him for years.
