Synopsis

In 4th-century China, Chu Ying-tai persuades her parents to permit her to study at the school in Hangchow. Disguised as a man she falls in love with Liang Shan-po, a fellow student, who despite her many hints never perceives her masquerade and romantic interest in him. After several years Liang Shan-po is informed of the disguise by the headmaster's wife, and he visits Chu Ying-tai, but by this time she is betrothed to another man. They part, and Liang Shan-po commits suicide. Chu Ying-tai learns of his death while preparing for her wedding, and donning mourning clothes instead of her bride's dress she visits his grave. A terrible storm breaks out, the grave opens, and she falls in. The storm abates, and Liang Shan-po and Chu Ying-tai emerge as butterflies.
