Synopsis

In 12th-century B. C. China, Ta Chi seeks revenge against the cruel Emperor Chou whose constant demands for taxes have driven her father to his death. Feigning love for the emperor, Ta Chi demands that he build a tower tall enough to pluck the stars from the heavens for her. The project drains the royal treasury and causes unrest among the people. Chi Fa understands the motives behind his friend's actions, but seeing the misery they are causing, he vows to kill both Ta Chi and the emperor. Captured by the emperor, he escapes with the help of Ta Chi, whose treachery nevertheless is discovered. Chi Fa returns to the palace with a rebel army, which traps Ta Chi and the emperor in the burning tower. Ta Chi dies knowing that the emperor's downfall is complete.
