Synopsis

Hua Mu-lan, a spinning girl, has dreams of becoming a soldier, but her father forbids it, even when he is called up to fight in a war and she offers to go in his place. Her cousin helps disguise her as a young man, and they go to war together. She distinguishes herself in combat and falls in love with her tentmate Li Kuang. After the Turks are defeated with the help of Hua Mu-lan's plan, Hua Mu-lan asks to go home, as she has been wounded in the climactic battle. Later Li Kuang visits his wartime friend's family and is surprised to learn that his former tentmate is a woman. Though he must return to the army he promises to come back one day and marry her.
