Synopsis

French explorer and documentarian Pierre-Dominique Gaisseau spent 7 months in New York City filming this pictorial essay. He primarily concentrates on the mores and customs of the various ethnic groups comprising part of the city's population. The opening sequence moves from a construction site where a demolition ball is knocking down an old building to modern glass skyscrapers. Other scenes include: a New Year's celebration in Chinatown, Hasidic Jews taking part in a ritual bath of purification, a gypsy wedding party, Japanese Buddhists celebrating their "Festival of Flowers," a Ukrainian wedding, and a German colony in a traditional dance. More familiar sights are the St. Patrick's Day parade, a fashion show, a revival meeting in Harlem, the Fulton Fish Market, and Broadway at night.
