Synopsis

Dimka, an energetic, mischievous kindergarten boy in Moscow, has many friends and is generally satisfied with his life. The only thing he lacks is a father. One night, Dimka dreams that his mother was unable to buy him a father because she wasted her money on ice cream. The next morning, Dimka runs away from kindergarten and sets out with his ice cream money to find a father in the city. He carefully studies the various men he sees, including department store mannequins and the statuary on buildings. Eventually he selects a young man named Andrey, who, touched by Dimka's situation, takes him for a meal and treats him to rides in an amusement park. Towards evening, Andrey takes the boy home to his mother and hurriedly tries to leave, but Dimka will not allow him to go. The adults' first meeting is awkward; they have tea together, sitting in embarrassed silence. Eventually Andrey leaves, but Dimka, a bold matchmaker, is not perturbed, excitedly anticipating the return of his new father.
