Synopsis

Yuji, captain of the soccer team at Shinetsu University, enforces a strict training regimen for his teammates, one of whom, Goro, protests against Yuji's procedures. Meanwhile, Yuji is informed by Professor Kanzaki that he has been selected to study in Germany. Yukiko, Kanzaki's daughter, is happy for Yuji, but she realizes that they will be separated for 3 years if he accepts the offer. Yuji has his own doubts about the offer because he has promised his grandfather Yonoshin, who owns a brewery, that he will take over the business if the soccer team loses the upcoming match. Goro discovers that the team has no funds for a training camp, and he challenges Yonoshin to a fencing match on the condition that Yonoshin finance the soccer team if he loses. Goro, who is a practiced swordsman, wins the match and obtains the contribution. While practicing on the eve of the match, Yuji hurts his leg but does not reveal the injury to his teammates; during the match, however, he reinjures the leg and sends in Goro as his replacement. The opposing team wins the match, and Goro admits that Yuji had been right about his training methods. Yonoshin surprises Yuji by granting him permission to go to Germany instead of holding him to his promise, and Yuji and Yukiko part without confessing their love.
