Synopsis

On 9 May 1945, Soviet truce envoy Mikhail Platonov, carrying a white flag, approaches the cathedral of a German town. Three SS officers within, determined to continue fighting, refuse to surrender with their compatriots. Earlier that day, Platonov, a former language teacher now serving as an interpreter with the Soviet occupation forces, met Olya, a Soviet field nurse. The couple were introduced to each other by Captain Nefyodov, a mutual friend long in love with Olya. Despite their wish not to hurt their friend, it quickly became clear that Olya and Mikhail were in love. Their plans for the future--happier days free of the hatred and violence of war--are cut short, however, when Mikhail is shot and killed by one of the escaping SS men.
