Synopsis

A survey of Soviet dance, incorporating film clips dating back to the early 1930's. The selections include the "Waltz of the Flowers" from The Nutcracker , performed by the State Symphonic Ensemble and Corps de Ballet; scenes of the young Galina Ulanova performing in The Dying Swan ; performances of the Moldavian dance "Moldavenets," the Belorussian dance "Kriznachek," and the Azerbaidzhan dance "Kazaki" by the State Ensemble of Folk Dances; a performance by the Turkmenian Ensemble; an excerpt from The Swan Lake, danced by Galina Ulanova and Konstantin Sergeyev; "Quadrille," performed by the Moiseyev Ensemble; selections from Taras Bulba, featuring Mikhail Dudko, Vakhtang Chabukiani, Sergey Koren, and the Ukrainian State Corps de Ballet; from Paquita, performed by the Maly Leningrad Ballet Ensemble, featuring Galya Pirozhaya and Andrey Khamzin; and from The Fountain of Bakhchisaray, featuring Galina Ulanova, Maya Plisetskaya, and Pavel Gusev; "Polovetskian dance" from Borodin's Prince Igor, featuring Olga Lepeshinskaya and the Bolshoi Theater Ballet; and performances by members of the 1958 graduating class of the Soviet National Ballet Schools, including Yekaterina Maksimova dancing in The Nutcracker, and Alla Sizova and Rudolf Nureyev in Le corsaire.
