Synopsis

Cafe band conductor Johann Strauss develops a unique rythmic pattern for dance music. When he introduces his compositions, Millie, a milliner with whom Johann has been having an affair, ignores the initial unpopularity of the music and teaches the customers a new dance called the waltz. The Viennese become more tolerant as royalty accepts the waltz, and Johann soon becomes rich and famous. He leaves his wife and three children and tours Europe with Millie, but she is shunned for being his mistress. Upon returning, Johann is enraged to find that his son, Johann, Jr., has also achieved fame as a conductor. The aging musician overcomes his anger, however, when he hears his son perform, and a reconciliation takes place when Johann, Jr., visits his dying father.
