Synopsis
Torajiro Kuruma, also known as Tora, is a fumbling but well-meaning racketeer who continually becomes involved in minor scrapes with his relatives and those who befriend him. On his way to Beppu, he stops at his uncle's house but avoids staying too long, despite the pleas of his sister, Sakura, because he is aware of the trouble he has caused his uncle in the past. He passes by the house of his teacher, Mr. Tsubouchi, and decides to visit him. The two enjoy a warm reunion and settle down to a delicious meal prepared by Natsuko, Mr. Tsubouchi's daughter and Tora's former classmate. Unused to such fine food, Tora's stomach becomes upset and he is taken to a hospital, where Natsuko must apologize to the doctors for his rambunctious behavior. After he recovers, Tora again takes to the road, this time toward Kyoto, where he believes his real mother is living. The woman turns out to be a miser who owns an inn of questionable reputation, and a very different person from that Tora had pictured. Tora returns to his uncle's house, now aware of his love for Natsuko. However, Mr. Tsubouchi suddenly dies, and at his funeral Tora learns some bitter facts.
