Synopsis

In the mid 1500's, Ottoman Sultan Suleiman's army advances toward Central Europe, spreading ruin and death. His grand vizier, Ibrahim Pasha, suggests that the troops march on Vienna, but Suleiman's vanity leads him to attack Szigetvar, an isolated Christian fortress defiantly commanded by Nicholas Orlovic. During the battle, Suleiman dies of a stroke; Ibrahim hides the news from the soldiers, however, by killing all of the witnesses. Inside the swamp-bound outpost, Ivan, a young officer who is in love with Orlovic's daughter Vesna, is ordered by the jealous Gaspar, Orlovic's second-in-command, to bring reinforcements from Vienna. The renegade Gaspar deserts when Vesna repulses his advances. Returning from Vienna, Ivan is attacked by Gaspar, who drowns in the marshland. Ivan arrives at Szigetvar and informs Orlovic of the Viennese court's indifference toward their struggle. The commander orders the evacuation of all women and children, then leads his garrison in a hopeless counterattack against the Turkish forces. Orlovic's heroic sacrifice succeeds in halting the fatigued Turkish army, which, hampered by the beginning of the rainy season, retreats from Austria. Ivan and Vesna lead the children back to safety.
