Synopsis
As Hitler rises to power in Germany in 1934, a high-ranking Nazi official discourses on the virtues of German youth while his wife seduces Frank Sandweg, a younger man. Bored by the official's lecture, Frank's friend Jimmy Velte ushers the Nazi into the bedroom where his wife and Frank are making love. The older man pulls a gun, and the youths beat him up, but they are apprehended and sent to prison. Undaunted, they engineer an escape, steal a car, and embark on a life of crime that includes riddling their victims with bullet holes ("freckles"). After meeting Brigitte, a young woman who becomes Frank's mistress, the two fugitives execute a series of daring bank robberies, calling a halt to their raids only when the authorities get too close for comfort. Jimmy flees to Switzerland and falls in love with Brigitte's friend Monika, who knows nothing of the trio's notorious reputation. All goes well until money runs out, and Brigitte deserts Frank for an older, wealthier man. Frank and Jimmy return to robbing banks, then head for Marseilles and a ship that will take them to South America. But Jimmy wants to see Monika once more, and, although they are sought by the police of three nations, Frank accompanies his friend back to Switzerland. By now, however, Monika knows the truth; and after rejecting Jimmy, she cooperates with the police by helping them trap the fugitives in a park. Although Monika begs them to surrender, Frank and Jimmy refuse to be taken alive. Exchanging a brief farewell, they face each other, take out their revolvers, and open fire.
