Synopsis

Commissioned by French national television to film a documentary about Americans in Vietnam, Pierre Schoendorffer and his crew spent 6 weeks in the fall of 1966 with a platoon commanded by a Negro graduate of West Point, Lieut. Joseph Anderson. The platoon, which is characterized by racial harmony and comradeship, has been assigned to a unit ordered to take the crest of a hill about 250 miles north of Saigon. The men are landed by helicopter in the area and inch their way across fields and small rivers under constant enemy fire. During a temporary break in the fighting, one soldier is given leave to go to Saigon. But he quickly squanders his money and returns to the platoon before his pass has expired. Once Lieutenent Anderson and his men have moved into a small village, they are ordered into combat again. As the wounded and dead are removed by helicopter, the battle for the crest of the hill continues.
