Synopsis

Tsutomu Yoshioka, an office worker, is engaged to Mariko, the niece of his company's president. Yoshioka has overcome many obstacles to reach his respectable position. While working his way through college, he met Mitsu, a country girl who worked in a factory. They had a brief but intense affair, which Yoshioka broke off when a friend advised him that Mitsu would not fit into his future plans. Shimako, who worked with Mitsu in the factory and now runs a disreputable business, meets Yoshioka at a party and tells him of Mitsu's continued hardships, including the aborted pregnancy of his child. Yoshioka is briefly concerned, but he puts Mitsu out of his mind in preparing for his wedding. Shimako arranges for the pair to meet after Yoshioka is married, and she takes photographs of the meeting, intending to blackmail Yoshioka without Mitsu's knowledge. Mitsu learns of Shimako's plans and tries to destroy the evidence. During the ensuing scuffle Mitsu falls from a window and dies.
