Synopsis

During the early days of World War II Makito, a young student, falls in love with Yuko, the widow of a naval officer. She is unable to return his affection, as the memory of her husband remains strong, but her younger sister, Yumiko, is attracted to Makito. Inspired by the example of Tadayuki, a naval officer and friend of Yuko's late husband, Makito enters the naval academy and is later disappointed by the news of Yuko's forthcoming marriage to Tadayuki. Shortly after the wedding Tadayuki is assigned to the Kamikaze Squadron, never to return. After the war Makito learns of the deaths of his mother and of Yumiko. He meets Yuko and informs her that Tadayuki was assigned to the Kamikaze Squadron because he had married his friend's widow. Yuko, feeling responsible for Tadayuki's death, thanks Makito for his devotion and takes her own life.
