Synopsis

During the peaceful Genroku Era, the arts flourish while political morality declines. In contrast to the penchant of the times for material possessions, two young samurai, Tenzen Tange and Yasubei Nakayama, members of different fencing schools, devote their lives to the study of martial arts. The two meet on the way to Takada-no-Baba, where Yasubei intends to avenge his uncle, who was slain by 36 swordsmen belonging to Tenzen's school. Singlehandedly, Yasubei kills all of them. Under the samurai code, Tenzen is expelled for not helping his men, as is Yasubei, for pursuing a private feud. Lords Asano and Uesugi, two powerful daimyo impressed by Yasubei's skills, compete for his service. Yasubei is undecided between the two offers until he meets Chiharu, the sister of Ryunoshin Nagao, a Uesugi retainer. Yasubei's love for Chiharu leads him to decide in favor of Uesugi until he learns that Chiharu is Tenzen's fiancée, at which point he becomes Lord Asano's vassal.
