In 1929 Lieut. Takeo Kato, an instructor in the newly-formed Japanese Air Force, becomes close friends with two of his students at the Tokorozawa Flying Academy. They are 2d Lieut. Kihara, who like Kato transferred to the air force after graduating from the army academy, and Cho Eishun, a Chinese officer studying aviation in Japan. War breaks out a few years later between Japan and China. In 1937 Kato and Kihara are in northern China when Kihara's plane is shot down by an enemy pilot (Cho Eishun). Kato challenges his old friend to an air duel and with some regret shoots him down. Kato has nightmares and continues to be troubled about his duel with Cho Eishun, and he tells his anguish to his wife, who begins to sense the impact of the incident on her husband.
