Synopsis

In early 17th-century Venice the doge arranges for his son, Manrico Masiero, to marry socially acceptable Isabella Fieschi. At the same time pirates led by Titta are plundering the city and surrounding areas, overpowering the doge's ineffective mercenary troops. After Titta's forces attack the engagement ceremony, Manrico organizes an anonymous band of concerned citizens to combat the pirates; he dons a mask and calls himself "The Lion of St. Mark" to protect his identity. Meanwhile, he becomes attracted to a pirate named Rosanna and rescues her when she is captured by the mercenaries. The grateful Rosanna nonetheless remains on the side of the pirates until she learns that the "Lion" and Manrico, her rescuer, are the same man. Following a successful routing of the pirates, Manrico's uncle adopts Rosanna, enabling her to attain the proper social standing to marry the doge's son.
