Synopsis

In 180 Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius dies, and his cruel and powerful son Commodus ascends to the throne. His conduct incenses Laetus, a wise senator, and his son Septimus, who openly supports the oppressed barbarians. Ursus, a mighty gladiator, is anxious to win freedom for his fiancée, Arminia, one of Laetus' slaves. Commodus kidnaps Arminia to force Ursus into fighting him in the arena. Marcia, Commodus' concubine, protects Arminia while Commodus, humiliated in battle by Ursus, accuses him of conspiring with Laetus against him. Commodus' reaction causes Ursus to join the rebel army, led by Septimus, to defeat the Roman legions and kill Commodus.
