Synopsis

Schoolboys Matthew O'Brien and Timothy Ryan play hooky on Saint Patrick's Day to go fishing. At the end of the day, Tim goes home but Matt stays on, hopeful of catching a fish. He has no luck, however, and is about to leave when he sees a big frog at the water's edge. He captures it, puts it in his pocket, and, running to catch up with Tim, becomes lost in a dark forest. He meets a leprechaun whose beard is caught in a log and frees the little man in exchange for his bag of seven gold coins. The leprechaun warns Matt that the coins will do good only for others, and he disappears. Matt learns that each coin is capable of granting a wish, and, paying no attention to the leprechaun's admonition, he uses one of them to ask a signpost the way to his home. The signpost tells Matt to consult the wizard who dwells in a cave. On the way to the cave, Matt learns from a grove of talking trees that the frog is actually an enchanted knight, and he therefore uses a coin to return the knight to his human state. The two travel on and suddenly meet the wizard, who banishes them to the Impossible Desert, but there a genie returns them to the forest. Matt meets an old puppeteer who has lost his ability to move his puppets' strings, and with a coin Matt brings the puppets to life to take care of the puppeteer in his old age. Matt meets a gypsy girl who as a princess was kidnaped by the wizard. Restoring her to her former self, Matt learns that the knight has been seeking the princess for many years. Matt is told that his home will be found at the end of a rainbow. He looks for the rainbow, but the wizard appears and blocks Matt's way, whereupon Matt turns the wizard into a kindly old man. He finds a rainbow and after bidding his newfound friends goodby follows it into his own backyard.
