Synopsis

Eda, Urahashi, and Iwase, friends who work in the same bank, go mountain climbing during the holidays. Iwase, unable to sleep on the train, grows tired during the climb and frequently falls behind the others. Even at the mountain camp he cannot sleep, and the second day out finds him wearier than before. During the descent the men encounter a bank of thick fog and must decide between two routes: a shortcut known to Iwase, or a longer but safer route advocated by Eda. The men decide on Eda's choice, but they lose their way, and when Eda goes for help, Iwase, exhausted and delirious, wanders off a cliff. The next winter, Eda climbs the same mountain with Makita, Iwase's cousin, who suspects foul play in Iwase's death. Confronted with the evidence and Makita's threat to report it to the police, Eda admits he murdered Iwase, who was having an affair with his wife. Eda murders Makita to suppress the evidence, but an avalanche kills Eda.
