Synopsis
On 24 May 1956 Henri Beaudout, Marc Modena, Gaston Vanackere, José Martinez, and two cats set out from Halifax, Nova Scotia, on a 17- by 31-foot raft, L'Egaré II (The Lost One). Martinez falls ill and must be transferred to a Canadian trawler, but the others, determined to cross the Atlantic, remain at sea for 88 days. Having fought cold, hunger, sharks, exposure, and the unpredictable elements, they finally reach Falmouth, England, on 21 August, thus becoming the first men in history to achieve a west-to-east crossing of the Atlantic on a primitive raft.
