Synopsis

In 1863, Lord Matsudaira of the Tokugawa Shogunate obtains a pardon for Hachiro Kiyokawa, a free samurai in prison for murdering a police agent. Although Kiyokawa is notoriously anti-Shogunate, Matsudaira figures he can now employ the samurai's oratorical and organizational talents to form a free samurai party which will suppress the anti-Shogunate movement in Kyoto. Matsudaira's fears that Kiyokawa might be assassinated because of his new political stance are confirmed when the samurai's old comrades in the anti-Shogunate movement attempt to kill him. Kiyokawa slays his attackers, but once in Kyoto he announces that he is still opposed to the Shogunate and intends to lead a force against the anti-Royalist movement. Angered at Kiyokawa's treachery, Matsudaira dispatches Tadasaburo Sasaki, a Shogunate guard, to assassinate Kiyokawa, and, at the height of the samurai's popularity, Sasaki kills him on an Edo street.
