Synopsis

A schoolboy in Hokkaido captures a rare butterfly and shows it to his teacher, who refuses to believe that the boy caught it nearby, since the variety is found only in the extreme southern region of Japan. Suspected of lying, the boy tearfully destroys the insect. The film then traces what might have been the butterfly's journey from the south. Through the eyes of the butterfly, which becomes a symbol of love, the dehumanizing aspects of contemporary urban life in cities such as Nagasaki, Hiroshima, Kyoto, Osaka, Hong Kong, and Yokohama are shown.
