Synopsis

Goro grows up in a slum where his widowed mother works as a prostitute and his sister dies of malnutrition. Unable to enter school, he turns to petty crime but is caught and sent to jail, where he learns more effective criminal methods. Out of prison, he joins a small gang and is nearly killed by a rival group, only to be nursed back to health by his girl friend, who becomes a prostitute to pay for his medical expenses. Once healthy, he joins a larger gang, marries another woman, and has a son. His family becomes more important to him, and he decides to go straight. A fellow gangster is killed, and tradition dictates that Goro attend the funeral. Despite the suspicion over his leaving the gang that marks him as a target for other gangsters, Goro goes to the funeral, taking along a gun to protect himself. He is arrested and convicted for carrying a concealed weapon, and from his prison cell, he renews his determination that neither he nor his son will ever be involved in crime.
