Synopsis

Confederate Gen. Richard Stoddert Ewell scorns the Christian values of fellow officers Gen. "Stonewall" Jackson and Gen. "Jeb" Stuart. Ewell lusts for the excitement of war and becomes irked when delayed orders force him to miss the first battle of Manassas. Shortly before the second battle of Manassas, Ewell enters the tent of General Jackson to confirm battle orders and finds Jackson praying. He is struck by the sincerity and humility of the officer and leaves in silence. During the fight that follows, Ewell is wounded and his aide is killed. That night, through the guidance of Jackson, Ewell finds solace in the Christian philosophy; once a battle-hardened cynic, Ewell develops an attitude of piety, and after Jackson's death, he takes over the general's command.
