Synopsis

Scenes of everyday life in the Hawaiian village of Kalapana, located on the slope of an active volcano, include views of fishermen casting nets on the shore; paniolos (Hawaiian cowboys) roping and slaughtering a bull; fishermen gathering opihis (shellfish) as the waves crash and recede around them; historic Hawaiian stone carvings in the lava fields; a young boy drawing pictures to show to his mother who is inside a church polishing a boar's tusk; an artist restoring a painting of a saint on the church wall; villagers weaving out of coconut fronds a small enclosure behind the church for a luau (traditional Hawaiian feast), children playing and swimming in a spring-fed pool; the jungle near Kalapana; two men capturing a wild pig; a paniolo branding a bull; the men killing and cleaning the pig and preparing it for roasting; villagers preparing the roasting pit and placing the meat to be cooked over it; people gathered around after the feast listening to Hawaiian guitar music; the aftermath of the luau the next morning; and finally, one villager's quietude being suddenly disturbed by the appearance of a bulldozer on his front lawn to make ready for the construction of a new road.
