Synopsis

In 1965, Joris Ivens, a 70-year-old Dutch documentary filmmaker, spent 2 months in North Vietnam above the 17th parallel of the demilitarized zone to examine the extraordinary resistance of the Vietnamese people to the devastation of war. Although the film contains some scenes of the North Vietnamese bombing U. S. sites and shooting down planes, the major portion of the footage is devoted to the people themselves. Their village life, as depicted in the film, centers around building underground shelters, schools, and hospitals, filling in bomb craters, and continuously constructing booby traps and fortifications against the enemy.
