Synopsis

At a dance, 17-year-old Bobina meets Josef Pepik, a young mechanic, and makes love to him on the eve of his departure for Algeria, where he has a construction job. When Bobina learns that she is pregnant, her volatile mother insists that she marry the man despite the fact that the only word that she has received from him is a postcard showing three camels beneath a blue sky. Bobina writes to him, but her letter is returned with the news that he has been killed in an accident. Bobina's mother, who is also illegitimate, takes the news as another example of the selfish way in which women are treated by men. She demands that Bobina have an abortion, but Bobina takes her mother's money and goes to a hospital to have the baby. When she returns home, she meets Alfred, her mother's latest lover, and he takes her to register the baby under Josef's name. Because of bureaucratic complications, however, they are unable to convince the authorities of the infant's paternity. Alfred eventually persuades some of Josef's friends to verify Bobina's claim, but Bobina's mother ruins the arrangement by throwing the friends out of her apartment. While Alfred, Bobina, and her mother are making tentative plans for establishing some sort of family life, Alfred's mistress of 20 years arrives to retrieve Alfred. Left alone with her illegitimate mother and her illegitimate child, Bobina thrusts the postcard in front of a portrait of her illegitimate grandmother.
