Synopsis

The son of well-to-do parents, Chico, a young Puerto Rican living in Spanish Harlem, becomes a heroin addict after a rivalry between him and his father for his mother's affection drives him to drugs. Following a 6-month jail term, Chico, now cured of his drug habit and working in his father's business, meets Nick, his former dealer, for a casual drink; but Chico's enraged father assumes his son has resumed drug use and again evicts him from home. Chico takes refuge with Nick and soon is helping him peddle heroin. Guilt-ridden and lonely after the death of his addict friend Tito, Chico returns to his addiction and is expelled from the drug mob. Having become involved with Laura, a prostitute, Chico is hunted by both the police and the mob. In desperation, he returns home to his father, who finally realizes his own guilt and helps protect his son.
