Synopsis
At the turn of the century, 10 Jews respond to a Russian pogrom by emigrating to Galilee. In the desert the nine men and one woman battle for survival against the forces of nature, hostile Arabs, and their own human weaknesses. Despite these obstacles Yosef and Manyah marry. Although a healthy son is born of this union, Manyah dies of malaria during a drought. As the mother is buried, a rainstorm breaks the drought. This proves a good omen, for Yosef thereafter befriends Sheikh Mustafa, enabling the settlers to live in peace with their Arab and Turkish neighbors.
