Synopsis

Aging widower Giovanni Merino is devoted to his young and talented son, Antonio. On the boy's behalf, Merino, a popular teacher, hopes to open an art school and eagerly awaits the letter of permission from the Ministry of Education. On the day of its arrival Merino is attending a baptism. Well aware of his father's eagerness, Antonio rushes to the christening. In his excitement he dashes across the street and is killed by an automobile. The grieving father finds teaching a painful reminder of his dead son and announces his resignation. Before it can be accepted, however, a new pupil enters his class. Gabriel, a carpenter's son, restores Merino's faith in life and rekindles his enthusiasm for teaching. He then announces his departure. Dismayed, Merino traces the boy to a church, where he discovers a statue of the Madonna and Child. The figure of Jesus is identical to that of Gabriel.
