Synopsis

While on a holiday, Frantisek Pokorny, a fat, aging clerk, meets and falls in love with Alice, an attractive young woman from Prague. To his surprise, she reciprocates his interest, and, encouraged by the assistant manager at the office, Frantisek clumsily courts and marries her. Despite the fact that the marriage is not consummated because Alice claims to be still suffering from a childhood trauma, Frantisek is blissfully happy. Even his week-long separations from Alice at first do not bother him, since they have the weekends together after she completes her work in Prague. Hoping to spend every night with his wife, Frantisek later asks to be transferred to Prague but instead is given a promotion by the assistant manager. Frantisek becomes suspicious, follows Alice to Prague, and learns that his wife and the assistant manager, who is already married, are having an affair. Frantisek dreams of killing both of them but realizes that the result would be his own arrest; he also considers suicide but realizes that this solution would only lead to his own funeral--and freedom for the lovers. He finally decides to blackmail the assistant manager for a better job and ignore his wife's infidelities. Content with his solution to the problem, Frantisek now controls the fate of the adulterous lovers.
