Synopsis

During the Israeli-Arab War of 1956, Dan, a young Israeli pilot, is forced to bail out of his plane inside enemy-held desert territory. The plane crash destroys a Bedouin encampment, leaving only a Bedouin woman, her 5-year-old son, and an infant girl. When Dan finds them, the woman is severely burned, suffering from shock, and unable to nurse her baby. He cares for her and nourishes the child with goat's milk. Later, the woman repays his kindness by hiding him from an Egyptian patrol. Eventually, a lost Israeli army officer joins them and nearly guns down the woman to protect his security; but the pilot restrains him, and together they attempt to repair a small reconnaissance plane. As the three survivors work together, national differences disappear, and the officer is deeply touched when the Arab boy asks him to become his new father. Consequently, when the plane is repaired, the officer remains behind as Dan takes off with the Bedouin family; but the plane crashes, and only the infant girl, Sinaia, survives. The officer takes the child in one arm and a submachine gun in the other and heads toward the desert.
