Synopsis

Maila, princess of a primitive mountain tribe, decides to defy tradition and marry Albert, a man from a lowland tribe. At first her father refuses to allow the marriage, but when she threatens to commit suicide by cutting down her tree of life (igorota), her father relents, and the wedding ceremony is performed. The ceremonial ritual includes the slaughter of a chicken and the disemboweling of a live buffalo and a pig. Princess Maila and Albert go to live in a city, where Albert's family subjects the princess to years of humiliation. When their first child dies, the wife returns to the mountains, followed by Albert. They begin living with the mountain tribe, but he is hated by her people and eventually axed to death by one of the tribesmen.
