Synopsis

Katina, an impoverished Greek peasant woman, visits Vlahopoulos, a wealthy landowner, hoping to arrange the marriage of her shepherd son Thanos to his beautiful daughter Despina. Thanos' employer, Karavidas, also wants to have his son Yankos marry Despina, but Vlahopoulos decides that she will marry Papadimas, a cultured friend of Despina's brother. Angered at the loss of Despina, Yankos kills Thanos' dog, and the shepherd is blamed when the flock of sheep stray. Thanos arranges a rendezvous with Despina, and after several clandestine meetings, the couple fall in love and vow to run away together. They rob a store and take refuge in the nearby mountains. Vlahopoulos learns of the seduction of his daughter and sets out with a group of people from the village to seek revenge. The villagers discover Thanos and Despina, and Yankos challenges Thanos to a fight, in which Yankos is killed. Thanos and Despina then commit suicide by leaping from the mountain.
