Synopsis

New York filmmakers Joel L. Freedman and Philip F. Messina interview Wayne Shirley, a black Vietnam veteran who earns his living as a prostitute and admits to using drugs, although he maintains that he is not "hooked." The interview moves from the street to Shirley's East Village apartment, where "Sonny" Berrios and Angel Sanchez, his two Puerto Rican friends, discuss social philosophy. After injecting heroin into their veins, the three men continue the discussion until they lose consciousness. Four months later, the filmmakers again encounter Shirley, but this time he is transformed: his eyes are dull, his speech is thick, and his face is scarred and sagging. He confesses that he fooled himself about drugs and that he is now addicted. Despite the filmmakers' efforts to get Wayne into a drug rehabilitation program, the next time they see him he is totally dependent on heroin and is planning to leave New York City for his home in Indiana.
