Synopsis
Tom Sheppard, first mate on a fishing boat, returns home with the body of Steve Maritz, son of fleet-owner Dirk Maritz, and tells the old captain that the young man died a hero's death on the high seas in a daring rescue. The saddened Maritz visits Michael, an older son by a former marriage, in the hope that Michael will be able to take Steve's place, but the father learns that his Cambridge-educated son lives by a code different from his own. Disgusted, he leaves his son's home in Johannesburg and returns to the South-West African coast, complaining about Michael's "softness" and mannered personality. The young man comes to the port on his own, however, and Sheppard gives him a job. When Michael begins an ill-fated romance with Jess, Sheppard's leukemia-stricken daughter, he sparks the jealousy of Hennie de Waal, one of the sailors in the fleet, who then divulges that Sheppard was responsible for Steve's death. The first mate admits to Maritz that he locked Steve in a room when he refused to pay heed to another ship's distress call, and that the young man was killed in an ensuing scuffle. Maritz fires Sheppard, and the sailors refuse to ship out with the fleet owner until the first mate is restored to his position. After Jess dies, Michael acts as a conciliator between his embittered father and the crew. The boat goes out on a fishing run and encounters another distress call. Old Maritz decides to ignore the signal, but Michael countermands his father's order, proving himself to be a strong-willed man, and finally wins the old man's acceptance.
