Synopsis

A bored young sculptor who describes himself as "impotent, alcoholic, and drugged," leaves Rome on a motor trip to Paris, smuggling a shipment of narcotics inside his statue of the she-wolf giving suck to Romulus and Remus. En route he encounters a hitchhiker--Michèle, the elegant Parisian mistress of a rich, middle-aged Italian--and she abandons her lover to accompany him. Along the way, he ruminates bitterly on the waste and coarseness of modern life, insulting and abusing both Michèle and himself, finding satisfaction only in his skill as a driver. In an episode on board a yacht on the Riviera, he gets drunk, uses narcotics, reveals his divorce, and exhibits suicidal tendencies. At an inn, the two switch bed partners in a sexual encounter with a brother and sister, but they resume their trip together. They rush to a hospital with a screaming woman who has been injured in an automobile accident, then arrive in Paris with their cargo intact, only to be murdered by members of the dope ring.
