Synopsis

Jim Finney, a 13-year veteran as a Chicago Bears defensive tackle, is told by the head coach that he can no longer play. Finney is offered the job of defensive coach, but he has other aspirations--he spends his time painting. He is quickly disillusioned, however, when his portrayals of football situations are spurned by his associates and by art dealers. Because Finney's failures compare unfavorably with the success of his wife, Joyce, as a singer, they eventually separate. Finney constantly relives his past glories in football; but his hopes of playing again never materialize, and at last he becomes a bartender.
