Synopsis
Late one winter night, Hans, driving with his girl friend, Gunilla, runs over a pedestrian and kills him. They leave the scene of the accident and spend the night and next day rationalizing their behavior. As they drive through the country, they talk also about their unsatisfactory physical relationship. Hans swings violently from rage at Gunilla, to blame of the dead man's carelessness, to hopelessness and exhaustion. Reluctantly, even scornfully, he accepts Gunilla's physical tenderness. Finally she can stand his guilt-ridden neuroticism no longer, and she runs away. Hans catches up with her and persuades her to come back with him. Though Hans reads the newspaper account of the accident with little visible emotion, he and Gunilla realize that the entire experience has seriously affected their relationship and altered their futures. They decide to drive home, and just as they arrive, a police car pulls up beside them.
